Komodo National Park isn't just about the dragons — though the world's largest lizard is certainly a draw. Beneath the surface, the convergence of the Indian and Pacific Oceans creates one of the planet's most thrilling drift-diving destinations. North Komodo delivers adrenaline-fuelled seamount dives at Castle Rock and the pulse-racing Cauldron. Central Komodo offers the perfect balance with Manta Point's iconic cleaning stations and the coral gardens of Siaba Besar. South Komodo reveals a wild, nutrient-rich frontier — cold-water macro paradise and dense manta aggregations at Manta Alley. With a hyperbaric chamber now in Labuan Bajo (since 2018), 60+ liveaboard vessels, and daily visitor caps to protect this UNESCO World Heritage gem, Komodo is the essential bucket-list destination for serious divers.

The Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) was unknown to science until 1912 — discovered by Lt. J.K.H. van Steyn van HensbroekAdults can reach 3 meters (10 feet) and weigh 136 kg (300 lbs) — the world's largest living lizardKomodo dragons have venom glands, not just bacteria-laden saliva (disproving the long-held "bacteria bite" theory)Komodo National Park sits at the convergence of the Indian and Pacific Oceans — this collision of currents creates one of the most nutrient-rich marine environments on EarthOver 1,000 fish species and 260+ reef-building coral species have been documentedReef manta rays (Mobula alfredi) aggregate annually at Manta Point — up to 50 individuals in a single diveThe park was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1977 and a World Heritage Site in 1991Pink Beach (Pantai Merah) gets its distinctive color from fragments of red coral (Foraminifera) mixed with white sandEffective April 2026, a strict daily visitor cap of 1,000 people was introduced to protect the park's ecosystemsThe Siloam Hospital hyperbaric chamber (opened 2018/2019) transformed Komodo from a high-risk dive destination to one with on-site DCS treatment capabilityThe Cauldron (Shotgun) is widely considered the most thrilling drift dive in Southeast Asia
