The Revillagigedo Archipelago is named after Spanish viceroy Revillagigedo. The more common name "Socorro Islands" comes from Isla Socorro, the largest island. The archipelago is the tip of a massive volcanic mountain range rising from the Mathematician's Ridge, a mid-ocean spreading center on the Pacific Plate.San Benedicto Island had a major volcanic eruption in 1952-53, creating a new cinder cone called Volcán Bárcena. It was America's most recent volcanic island formation.Roca Partida is only 25 meters (80 feet) across at its widest point — a tiny rock pinnacle in the middle of the ocean. But beneath the surface, it drops over 3,000 meters (10,000 feet) to the seafloor. The Revillagigedo National Park covers 150,000 square kilometers (57,000 square miles) — larger than all of Mexico's national parks combined before its creation.Clarion Island, the westernmost island, is over 300 km from the nearest island in the group and hosts unique endemic bird species found nowhere else on Earth.Socorro is one of the few places in the world where you can reliably see giant Pacific manta rays (Mobula birostris) with wingspans of up to 7 meters (23 feet) at established cleaning stations. The giant mantas of Socorro are known to interact with divers — some individuals, identified by their unique belly spot patterns, return to the same cleaning stations year after year for decades.Roca Partida is arguably the best shark-diving site in the Eastern Pacific — Galapagos sharks, silky sharks, hammerheads, and tiger sharks all patrol its walls.Humpback whales migrate from Alaska to Socorro each winter (January-April) to calve and mate. It's one of the few places where divers can hear whale songs underwater. The nutrient-rich currents around the islands create the perfect conditions for the entire marine food chain — from plankton blooms to enormous super-pods of dolphins.Whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) pass through the archipelago during the winter months (November-May), often alongside the manta rays. The archipelago sits at a biogeographic crossroads where tropical and subtropical species mix — Indo-Pacific visitors meet Eastern Pacific residents. The only permanent structure on the islands is a Mexican naval garrison on Socorro Island, established to protect Mexico's territorial waters and now the park's enforcement presence. The archipelago was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016 — one of only a handful of mixed (natural and cultural) sites in the Pacific. In 2017, then-Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto signed the decree creating the Revillagigedo National Park, banning all fishing and resource extraction — a landmark conservation achievement. The "Socorro Islands" were named by Spanish explorer Hernando de Grijalva in 1533, who discovered Isla Socorro first. There are exactly ZERO hotels, restaurants, bars, stores, or roads in the Socorro Islands. Every trip is a liveaboard expedition. The crossing from Cabo San Lucas to Socorro takes 22-28 hours one way — you'll see nothing but ocean for a full day before the volcanic silhouette appears on the horizon.Nearly all liveaboards run Saturday-to-Saturday itineraries, making a Socorro trip a natural week-long vacation extension of a Baja California trip.
