Top Dive Sites in Moalboal — Sardine Run to Sunken Island

Moalboal packs an impressive variety into a compact peninsula. In a single day you can swim through a million-fish baitball from the shore, explore a 300-meter wall with a cathedral cave, drift over a submerged seamount with pelagics, and photograph macro life on a house reef at night. Here are the top dive sites, ranked by experience, with depths, conditions, and marine life highlights so you can build the perfect dive day.

1. Sardine Run (Panagsama House Reef)

The signature Moalboal experience. A permanent baitball of millions of Bali sardinella (Sardinella lemuru) hovers 20-30 meters off Panagsama Beach, 365 days a year. No boat required — walk in from the shore.

  • Depth: 1-35m (sardines at 1-15m, wall drops beyond)
  • Skill level: All levels (snorkel, freedive, scuba)
  • Entry: Shore dive from Panagsama Beach
  • Best time: 6:00-8:00 AM for clarity and fewer crowds

What you'll see: The sardine cloud shifts and parts around you as you swim — a rotating silver wall of fish so dense it blocks the light. Jacks and trevally hunt the edges. Green sea turtles are virtually guaranteed. The wall beyond drops steeply to 30m+ with lionfish, scorpionfish, and the occasional pelagic visitor.

Night diving: Legendary. Octopus, cuttlefish, and mandarinfish emerge at dusk (5:30-7 PM). The baitball loosens at night but remains present — divers report an entirely different experience after dark.

Best conditions: December-May (visibility 15-22m). The baitball is tightest and most photogenic in the dry season.

2. Pescador Island — North Wall

Moalboal's second icon — and many argue it's the better dive. A volcanic limestone pinnacle rising 300+ meters from the seafloor, 4 km offshore. The north wall is a dramatic vertical drop with the legendary Cathedral Cave.

  • Depth: 3-55m+ (wall beyond recreational limits)
  • Skill level: Open Water (calm days), Advanced recommended
  • Entry: Boat dive (15-20 minutes from Panagsama)
  • Features: Sheer vertical walls, Cathedral Cave swim-through at 18m, soft coral gardens, gorgonian fans

What you'll see: Whitetip reef sharks patrol the wall at depth. Green sea turtles are almost guaranteed — they graze on the upper reef between 5-15 meters. Cathedral Cave at 18m is a large swim-through with multiple exits where light streams through overhead fissures. Napoleon wrasse, frogfish, and nudibranchs reward a close look. Schools of jacks and barracuda sweep past in the blue.

Visibility: 20-30m in dry season, 15-20m in wet. Current runs mild to moderate — manageable for experienced Open Water divers on calm days.

Pro tip: Dive the north wall first (deep profile), then do the south wall as a second, shallower tank.

3. Pescador Island — South Wall

The quieter face of Pescador. Less vertical but more complex, with swim-throughs including the famous "Hole." A completely different character from the north wall.

  • Depth: 5-40m+
  • Skill level: Open Water / Advanced
  • Entry: Boat dive
  • Features: Steep wall, swim-throughs, healthy soft corals, large sea fans

What you'll see: Soft corals in vibrant purple and orange cover the upper sections. Large gorgonian fans extend into the current. Turtles graze the upper reef, whitetip reef sharks cruise deeper sections, and macro life (ghost pipefish, nudibranchs) hides among the coral formations. Less visited than the north wall — often more intimate.

4. Sunken Island

The advanced diver's adrenaline site. A submerged seamount between Pescador Island and the Moalboal coast whose pinnacle top sits around 25 meters. Open blue-water descent with no visual reference until the seamount appears below you.

  • Depth: 18-40m+ (pinnacle summit at ~25m)
  • Skill level: Advanced (strong currents, blue-water descent)
  • Entry: Boat dive — drift
  • Features: Submerged pinnacle, strong currents, pelagic encounters

What you'll see: A resident school of 20+ lionfish hovers over the summit. Schools of bigeye trevally, tuna, barracuda, and blue triggerfish sweep past. Mackerel form tight baitballs that draw larger predators. Occasional mantas and sharks cruise past in the blue. Spanish dancer nudibranchs on the pinnacle walls reward those who look away from the pelagic action.

Safety note: Strong currents are common. Advanced certification with good buoyancy control required. The boat follows your surface marker — this is a pure drift dive.

5. Tongo Point

The macro photographer's paradise. Rocky pinnacles, gutters, and overhaws south of Panagsama, with the famous electric clam population that draws underwater photographers from around the world.

  • Depth: 8-28m
  • Skill level: Advanced Open Water (current-driven drift)
  • Entry: Boat dive (10-15 minutes)
  • Features: Rocky pinnacles, gutters, electric clams, Tongo Point Marine Sanctuary

What you'll see: The flame scallops (Ctenoides ales) — called "electric clams" or "disco clams" — produce a pulsating flash along their mantle edges, creating a light show on the reef. Peacock mantis shrimp, nudibranchs (including Willan's chromodoris), and banded coral shrimp inhabit the crevices. Green sea turtles and blacktip reef sharks pass through. The marine sanctuary status means healthy fish populations.

Best conditions: Dry season (Dec-May) when the current at Tongo Point is manageable. The electric clams are present year-round.

6. Airplane Wreck

Moalboal's community-built artificial reef. A deliberately sunk Cessna two-seater resting at 20-28 meters, created by Savedra Dive Center in collaboration with the Philippine Coast Guard.

  • Depth: 20-28m
  • Skill level: Advanced Open Water (depth)
  • Entry: Boat dive
  • Features: Sunken Cessna aircraft encrusted with coral

What you'll see: The cockpit and fuselage provide shelter for lionfish and scorpionfish. Coral encrustation has transformed the wings and tail into living structures. Turtles are sometimes found resting inside the cockpit — a surreal photo. The small size (two-seater) means the wreck is compact enough to explore fully in a single dive.

7. Talisay Point / Talisay Wall

The "Turtle Heaven of Moalboal." A clean drop-off wall north of Panagsama with very high turtle probability and healthy hard corals.

  • Depth: 12-30m
  • Skill level: Intermediate (stronger currents possible)
  • Entry: Boat dive
  • Features: Clean drop-off wall, healthy hard corals, large gorgonian fans

What you'll see: Green sea turtles with very high probability — the site gets its nickname honestly. Trevally schools and jacks patrol the wall. Hard coral tables and massive barrel sponges provide habitat for reef fish. The wall structure means the current accelerates through certain sections — a classic drift profile.

8. Tuble Reef / Tuble Point

A drift dive with vertical wall canyons and macro treasures. Sandy slope bottoming into a wall with canyons formed by ancient water flow.

  • Depth: 5-30m
  • Skill level: Open Water / Advanced
  • Entry: Boat dive
  • Features: Sandy slope, vertical wall canyons, small cave at 27-30m

What you'll see: Pygmy seahorses hide among the gorgonian fans. Banded sea kraits (venomous but famously docile) patrol the reef. Nudibranchs, lionfish, and reef fish are abundant. The small cave at depth is a fun swim-through for those with the gas and comfort level. Drift dive — the boat follows your surface marker.

9. Kasai Wall / Kasai Point

A coral-covered steep slope with Moalboal's best whale shark probability. A short 5-minute boat ride from Panagsama.

  • Depth: 5-35m
  • Skill level: Open Water
  • Entry: Boat dive
  • Features: Hard corals on a steep slope

What you'll see: This site claims one of the highest whale shark sighting probabilities in Moalboal — whale sharks occasionally hunt the Sardine Run from the deeper water adjacent to Kasai. Turtles are common, nudibranchs populate the coral sections, and sea snakes are frequently sighted cruising the slope. The steep hard-coral-covered slope is a reliable, accessible dive.

10. White Beach (Basdaku)

A gentle sandy slope dive with excellent macro life and a 2 km stretch of white sand. Located 15 minutes north of Panagsama in Saavedra.

  • Depth: 3-25m
  • Skill level: All levels
  • Entry: Boat or shore dive
  • Features: Sandy slope, soft corals, sea fans

What you'll see: Razorfish, longnose hawkfish, ornate ghost pipefish, scorpionfish, and pelagic fish. The sandy slope and scattered coral outcrops create ideal macro habitat. A relaxed dive for all levels — good as a third dive after deeper profiles.
